In Chydera, Lesvos, at the village’s only kindergarten and primary school, the summer of 2025 marked a new chapter in its history — one filled with joy. Where once there was only dirt, stones, and rusty swings, now stands a brand-new playground — a donation from the IRENE Welfare Association.
This is not just a play area for the children of the village; it is a breath of life for all the surrounding villages, which until now had no playground at all. A space where children, parents, relatives, and friends can gather — a place of unity, play, and shared happiness.
This school carries a long history: from the earthquake of 1889, which claimed the lives of children, to the generous donation of the owner who offered the property to become a school, it has always been a cornerstone of the community. And now, thanks to the support of the IRENE Welfare Association and the touching efforts of the residents — who carried the materials with their own vehicles and hands to places unreachable by trucks — this space has come back to life.
From a past of loss to a present of joy: Chydera now has a place that belongs to everyone.
